Surgical Instructions
At Surgical & Sleep Solutions, we aim to ensure that you are well-prepared for your procedure and confident in your post-surgery care. Below are the detailed instructions for various types of surgeries and treatments offered at our practice, including what to expect before and after your procedure.
Pre-Surgery Instructions Before Anesthesia
Before undergoing anesthesia, it is crucial to follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and effective procedure:
- Do not eat or drink anything, including water, for 8 hours prior to surgery.
- If you have prescribed medications, take them with a small sip of water unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to and from the office, as you will not be able to drive after receiving anesthesia.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing jewelry or contact lenses.
- If you develop a cold, fever, or illness before surgery, please contact our office as your surgery may need to be rescheduled for your safety.
Extractions
For routine tooth extractions, follow these instructions:
- Avoid eating or drinking for 8 hours prior to surgery if anesthesia is being used.
- After the extraction, bite down on gauze for 30 minutes to stop bleeding.
- Avoid rinsing your mouth or spitting for 24 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot.
- Stick to a soft diet for the first 24 hours, avoiding hot or spicy foods.
- Avoid using straws for at least 48 hours to prevent dry socket.
Extractions of Multiple Teeth
If you are having multiple teeth extracted:
- Prepare for a longer recovery time and more significant swelling.
- It is common to experience moderate bleeding for several hours post-surgery. Change the gauze pads as directed.
- Stick to a liquid or very soft food diet for the first 48 hours.
- Swelling can be managed with ice packs on the face for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
- Keep your head elevated, especially during sleep, to reduce swelling.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
For wisdom tooth removal:
- You may experience more swelling and discomfort compared to single tooth extractions. Use ice packs to reduce swelling for the first 48 hours.
- Keep physical activity minimal for at least 72 hours post-surgery.
- Avoid rinsing or spitting for 24 hours, and refrain from smoking for at least 72 hours as it can significantly slow healing.
- Stick to a liquid or soft food diet for the first few days, gradually transitioning to solid foods as tolerated.
Sinus Surgery
Following sinus surgery:
- You may experience nasal congestion or a minor nosebleed for a few days post-operation. This is normal and should improve as you heal.
- Avoid blowing your nose or using straws for at least 10 days to prevent pressure from disturbing the surgical site.
- Keep your head elevated during sleep to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Stick to soft foods and avoid heavy chewing for the first week.
TMJ Surgery
For patients undergoing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) surgery:
- Prepare for a soft food diet for the first few days following surgery, gradually reintroducing solid foods as tolerated.
- Limit jaw movement, such as excessive talking or chewing, to allow proper healing.
- Ice packs can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Follow any specific jaw exercises or physical therapy instructions provided by your surgeon to aid in recovery.
Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift
For bone grafting or sinus lift procedures:
- Do not disturb the surgical site, and avoid brushing the area for the first 24 hours.
- Use a saline rinse as directed to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.
- Avoid blowing your nose and sneezing with your mouth closed to prevent pressure on the graft.
- Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days to prevent damage to the surgical site.
- You may experience slight swelling and discomfort. Use ice packs and prescribed medications to manage these symptoms.
Sinus Precautions
After any sinus-related surgery, including sinus lifts or other procedures:
- Avoid bending over or heavy lifting for at least one week, as these activities can increase pressure in the sinuses.
- Do not blow your nose for at least 10 days post-surgery.
- If you sneeze, do so with your mouth open to reduce pressure in the sinuses.
- If you experience excessive nosebleeds or a change in sinus pressure, contact our office immediately.
Exposure of Impacted Tooth
When exposing an impacted tooth:
- Swelling and discomfort are expected, and ice packs should be used for the first 48 hours.
- Follow a soft diet for the first 24-48 hours.
- Keep the surgical area clean by using salt water rinses or any prescribed oral rinse.
- Avoid touching the surgical area with your fingers or tongue to prevent irritation or infection.
Pre-Op Instructions
Before your surgery:
- Ensure that all medical forms are completed, and discuss any medications or health concerns with Dr. Shaunda Kell.
- Wear comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry or contact lenses.
- Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery if anesthesia is being used.
Post-Op Instructions
After your surgery:
- Rest for the remainder of the day, and avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours.
- Keep your head elevated, especially when sleeping, to reduce swelling.
- Use ice packs as directed to minimize swelling, and take all prescribed medications as instructed.
- Stick to a soft food diet for the first 24-48 hours, gradually introducing solid foods as you heal.
